Riail na Gaeilge - Speaking Irish

The success of the Irish College course relies on students committing to speaking Irish for its duration. At Coláiste Chorcaí, we expect all students to respect and follow this essential rule. While they may occasionally use English words or phrases within their Irish sentences, students are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of their time on the course by actively expanding their vocabulary. Simply put, speaking English hinders progress in learning Irish.

This rule is enforced in a fair, positive, and supportive manner, with a focus on rewarding effort and improvement. Students who consistently fail to cooperate will be required to leave the course without a refund. However, those with little or no fluency will receive additional support to help them build confidence and develop their language skills.

What about students with limited ability or no fluency?

Our courses are for students of all ability levels. Our goal is to build confidence and develop language skills through structured morning classes and immersive activities in the afternoons. Our program ensures that students engage with the language in a supportive, fun and encouraging environment, where they can practice Irish naturally and without pressure. Teachers and group leaders are always available to assist any student who encounters difficulties, providing guidance and encouragement throughout their learning journey. We are committed to creating an effective and enjoyable learning atmosphere where students of all fluency levels feel supported and motivated to improve.

Parents and family members are encouraged to be as positive as possible and to use whatever knowledge of the language they have, no matter how limited, when conversing with their son or daughter throughout the course. Ask them what they have learned and try to use it. Every effort, no matter how small, helps reinforce their learning and supports their progress in Irish.

Supervision of Students

Students are supervised at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the course. We maintain the lowest student-to-teacher/ceannaire ratios possible allowing for greater support and individual attention. All staff members are fully qualified and vetted in accordance with Department of Education and National Vetting Beareau regulations.

Students are not permitted to leave the Coláiste premises during the course without approval from the Coláiste authorities and written consent from a parent or guardian. Any student who leaves the premises without authorisation will face immediate expulsion from the course, with no refund of fees.
